What’s the Deal With Jim Carrey?

Jim Carrey is easily one of my least favorite people in the entire world. That fact wouldn’t bother him, I’m sure; he’s not out to impress me, and I guess a positive thing you could say about him is that the things he does, he does because he feels like it, without much regard for whether people want him to.
Of course, the problem with that is one of the things he does is spew to anyone who will listen the completely ridiculous claim that vaccines give children autism. That idea is so far removed from anything resembling the reality we live in here on this planet, that the only conclusion you can draw is that people like Carrey, who repeat these bullshit claims, are either stupid or deliberately trying to get kids to contract infectious disease. You may think people aren’t getting their medical information from a professional farter and his washed-up girlfriend, but they are. For celebrities like these to purposefully spread this kind of potentially lethal misinformation is unconscionable.
What should we say to Jim Carrey about this? I think Captain Picard can say it best:

But in less deadly news, it seems that Jim Carrey has gone even crazier lately, finding all the secrets to spiritual enlightenment and total awesomeness, which can be attained through the power of nonsensical bullshit. The key to his new uber-happiness is not thinking at all. “I understood…how ‘thought’ is responsible for most of the suffering we experience,” he says. So Jim Carrey has made it a point to jettison any kind of thought from his daily routine. I guess that probably goes a long way toward explaining his anti-vaccine ideas.
What else does he have to say about his New Agey spirituality? In talking about the enlightenment he’s achieved, he remarked: “I had this amazing feeling of freedom – from myself, from my problems. I saw that I was bigger than what I do. I was bigger than my body. I was no longer a fragment of the universe – I was the universe.”

You and these dudes, Jim
Carrey is so keen on his New Age dipshittery that he was a featured speaker at some kind of dumb meeting for the Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment, a group that calls upon the entertainment industry to make more “spiritual, new age, metaphysical, [and] inspirational” product. The event, which was referred to by one speaker as “a collective of pure intelligence”—presumably on the strength of attendees like Billy Zane and Melissa Etheridge—featured a parade of speakers talking about how awesome it is to be so enlightened, and how much better the world would be if only the images on TV were more “transformational,” whatever the hell that means.

Proudly transformational since 1984
These cats also believe there is only the present, that “past” and “future” are really just your brain remembering things incorrectly and making stupid guesses. So presumably, if we all agree to stop thinking about The Mask it will never have happened and we can, by the same token, prevent the upcoming Three Stooges movie from ever being made. Perhaps this wacky ass philosophy isn’t all bad.
But my real point is that Jim Carrey is all-around crazy, though perhaps not as crazy as the people who listen to him. It’s not like he was just in the audience, trying to learn what he could about being a New Age hippy-dippy douchebag. He was one of the headliners. He was up there on the rostrum telling others about the secret way to become enlightened and smug. People were looking to Jim Carrey—a man who pretends to make his anus talk for money—for fulfillment they find nowhere else in life. Jim Carrey has become something of a spiritual leader. Can you imagine having to admit to somebody that your new guru is, in fact, The Cable Guy? Can you even imagine having to admit that to yourself? Or how about having to admit it to Captain Picard? I think we know how that would go:
“Captain, I’m pretty sure Jim Carrey holds the key to all the universe’s secrets.”
