Suck It, Jesus

Every six months or so, amid all the ground the Christian moralists and religious conservatives of the world lose on the battlefronts of science, pop culture, education and morality itself–we get reminded of exactly how seriously people can take the Christian community.
Kathy Griffin just reminded us.
When she won an Emmy during their pre-recorded award ceremony this week, she gave a speech which is going to be cut from the telecast. Want to hear this offensive thing? Here it is:
“A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus.
…Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now.”
Granted, that last sentence is in pretty poor taste, nor does it make much sense, but the first sentence is one which should be applauded.
I’m split. I hate Kathy Griffin, but I hate politically correct, lip-service praise to a bastardized diety even more. I like what she said, but I don’t think she should’ve been given an award in the first place.
So let’s score the argument:
- Griffin makes a living poking fun at herself for not being famous, while constantly making fun of much much more famous people. -1 point.
BUT! She called out preachy pseudo-christians and expressed the ideals of atheists for once. 1 point. - Jesus made a living–magic tricks aside–revolutionizing morality in the world he lived in, and catapulting all of humanity out of oppressive collectivism and into an unprecedented era of freedom, compassion and decency. 1 point.
- Christianity makes a living working to undo everything its founder has done, from the Holy Roman Empire and the Spanish Inquisition to modern anti-free speech advocates. -5 points.
So there we have it. Jesus wins by a nose, and Christianity comes up losing. In conclusion, it’s a shame that Griffin had to be edited for this, because there are so many better reasons to take her off of television.
